Chapter eleven

Eventually, wordlessly he slid free from my body and continued to wash me, his touch sliding slowly over my flesh. We stepped from the shower and he wrapped me in a dry, fluffy towel.

I knew we couldn’t stay here forever, and neither could my sister. We had to think of a way to get to her before Black John found us and forced Elliot to do for him whatever it was he wanted. We still had no answers.

Elliot dried himself off, and I watched, drinking him in. We must have been thinking along the same lines. His gaze held the weight of regret when he turned his intense eyes on me. “I don’t know how safe it will be here, or how long. If you don’t want to wear the same dress, there are Marie’s clothes you can wear.”

“Thank you for offering them to me.” It was strange, being offered his wife’s clothing, but the dress I’d found myself in when we’d entered this world was dirty and torn.

“You’re welcome, Cassie,” Elliot said.

Regret sat like a heavy brick in the pit of my stomach as my hand skimmed over the beautiful dresses hanging in the wardrobe after Elliot led me to the front bedroom. I had to remember that Marie hadn’t really worn these dresses. They were a figment of Elliot’s memory. Some dresses were pale shades of lilac and blue, while others were pretty floral patterns of tiny flowers. I took out a pale pink dress that cinched at the waist and fell to mid-calf length. The material draped over my body as though it were made just for me.

I found clean undergarments and then put on the dress. I smoothed my thighs over the material. It was cool and fresh against my skin. Elliot glanced at me and he shucked a shirt over his head, his lips twisting with regret. Needing something to occupy my mind, I sat at the dresser, my hand finding the brush.

There was something comfortable about sitting here, brushing my hair. I watched Elliot’s reflection in the mirror, feeling as though I’d done this same thing a thousand times over. Me brushing my hair while Elliot dressed on his side of the room. My heart lurched when my logical mind kicked my butt. I had to stop torturing myself.

My gaze dropped to Marie’s jewellery box. Curious to see what Elliot had imagined was in here, I lifted the lid to see neat pockets of jewellery. There was a pair of marquisette ear-rings, a cameo brooch, and a set of rosette beads. A beautiful pendant on a golden chain set with a blood red ruby snagged my attention. The ruby was set in a bird-cage of delicate golden lines. The chain was cool to the touch as I lifted it up. Light shimmered from the facets of the gem as a light glowed from the centre of the ruby.

Warmth traveled up my arm. My skin tingled, and I was overcome with a sense of familiarity.
